Meet Dominique Zimmermann CEO of Bombshell Sportswear
I’m always so grateful for the fitness industry because it allowed me to build relationships with people all over the nation. I’ve been Facebook friends with Dominique for a few years and watching her share a little about her journey of starting her newest fashion endeavor was so inspiring. I remember when she made her first post talking about it and fast forward a couple years her clothing line has appeared in major fitness publications like Ironman Magazine, is the official activewear brand for Tropic Beauty, has been modeled by top fitness models and celebrities.
We are proud to introduce you to Dominique Zimmermann….
Wow I’ve been watching you share a little of your journey through social media about your fitness clothing line Bombshell Sportswear and it has been incredibly inspiring! When did you decide you wanted to start it and did you have a fashion background before?
Fashion fascinated me from the time I was a little girl. I was always playing dress up. My Mom was helping me design my jeans and sewing on appliqués back in elementary school. I wanted to be a fashion designer. I was born to create! I love to draw and I have always been that girl with a wild imagination.
As a young adult I had problems staying focused in school. It was very difficult for me to absorb information on the same level as other kids. I found myself interested in classes such as art or graphic design. After high school I wanted to enroll in the Fashion Institute Of Design And Merchandising. I panicked thinking I was not qualified and my dream was shattered. I was crushed, but I moved on. A few years passed and the dream of being a fashion designer never left my mind. I told myself one morning, “I’M GOING TO BE A DESIGNER!” I taught myself the business. No guidance, no tips on what to do and what not to do. I learned early on there are not many people out there that want to see you succeed or that give you encouragement to go after your dreams. I was just a young mind with a vision. I read a lot, I studied for endless hours at home. I would go downtown every week, walking the streets, talking to people, and asking questions. It took a few years but I did eventually start designing my own line of women’s clothing. I did not mass-produce, I created a vast variety of beautiful pieces. Everyday I would go to the boutiques I wanted my pieces in and ask to speak to the owner. Most of the time buyers were rude, put me down or said I was not good enough. That did not stop me! I ended up in stores in LA and Orange County and guess what? My dresses sold, celebrities wore my designs and I had built up quiet a list of women I would custom design clothing for. It was a huge accomplishment for me and what made it so special was the journey! I did it with all odds against me. It truly was the most satisfying feeling I’ve ever had. I paid my dues and I DID IT! Fast forward to today. Having this background has tremendously helped me with Bombshell Sportswear. I don’t think there is anyway I could have started this brand without the knowledge I had acquired all those years in fashion.
My second passion in life has always been fitness. It is the love of my life. Three years ago, I had another moment where I made up my mind “I’m going to start a new business venture in the activewear market.” You can say I’m half fashionista half Tomboy. I love girly things but I also love to get into the weight room with the big boys and throw some weights around. So it was just the perfect fit to combine the two together and create “Bombshell Sportswear.” My brand was born. Being a woman that lives in gym clothes I really did not find a brand that made me feel cute and sexy. So I decided to take on the challenge to create something very different and unique.
Tell us a little about your journey. Where you started to where you are today. What were you doing before Bombshell Sportswear, and how you brought it to life.
Oh Boy, my journey!
Before “Bombshell Sportswear” I was a talent agent for 11 years. It was a great time in my life. That is a whole other story but I can say, that also helped me with marketing this brand and the connections. Lets just say anything worth having is not easy. To say I have not struggled with creating this brand is an understatement. It took me two years just to launch my first collection. There are so many things involved with starting a business. It is time consuming and overwhelming. Every step forward were two steps backwards. I started with nothing. I had a name and that was it. I never thought I would see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thank goodness I have the will power and mindset to never give up.
When I say I’m going to do something, I DO IT and that’s all there is to it. I went from having just the name to starting off with my sketches. Then making my first patterns, sourcing fabric, development, sample making, labels, testing, dying all the way down the line to cut and sew for production.
The hours were endless as were the problems. The summer of 2014 I launched my first collection. Halleluiah!
How do you get motivated to do all that you do? Do you have any rituals
When you are passionate about something you enjoy, no matter how hard it is, you want to do it. You love it! What motivates me is when I see women wearing my designs and enjoying them. There is no greater feeling in the world. I get so much pleasure out of making other people happy.
You seem to be very organized. How has that played a role in your success and do you have any tips for someone who might not have “organizational skills” listed on their resume?
YES! Organization is key! I’m very OCD and I’m a perfectionist! If you are organized you more than likely are pretty darn good at multitasking and getting a lot accomplished. I would say it is safe to say you take pride in your work if you are very organized. The first thing I notice about someone is how does their workspace, house or apartment look? If it is upside down I can’t help but think to myself that their life must match how they live? SO yes in my opinion it is very important to be organized, especially if you are starting your own business.
What advice would you give to other aspiring designers?
My advice would be to always go after your dreams. With that being said, a lot of individuals have dreams but not a lot of people are willing to pay their dues and sacrifice to do what it takes to achieve success. It is not dropped off on your doorstep. Being a designer is beyond difficult. It is a constant struggle. If you want something in life you have to go out a get it! Whatever it takes!
Your makeup always looks absolutely flawless!! What 3 makeup products can you not leave the house without?
Now you are talking my language. Got to love the Glam! I have three products that I love, love love.
1. LA Girl – HD Concealer is my favorite right now. Hides dark circles under the eyes and does not cake or crack. Blends so well too. It is by far the BEST consealor I have ever used and I’ve used a lot.
2. My Tarina Tarantino “Spaklely powder” I dust on my checks and chin for that glowy skin look.
3. BUXOM lip-gloss. Can’t live without it!
When do you feel most beautiful?
I feel most beautiful when I’m all glammed up in a nice dress out on the town for an evening of cocktails and fun with friends and my husband.
